I play Division III volleyball at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, 2010/2011.
Before coming to Vassar I had been a setter ever since I started playing volleyball. When I made the team here, however, it was not as a setter, but rather as a “utility“ player. This term was as new to me as was position itself. Rather than setting as I had done throughout my entire volleyball career, I was hitting, passing, blocking and playing serve receive. This experience was extremely challenging, but I grew into the role and soon became a starter on the team.
Luckily for me, I had developed many of the “utility“ skills from Club Shoreline, so while it was challenging, I had a good foundation coming into this new role as a utility player, both physically and mentally.
The volleyball program here at Vassar is very unique. It encourages each player to focus not just on their physical skill, but the psychological aspects of the game as well. The program served as an excellent continuation for what I had taken away from Club Shoreline, and I am very grateful to have been given the opportunity to continue on with volleyball.
